The most emotional BMW: test M2 and M5 Competition.

What do the compact coupe and super-sedan have in common, where did this monstrous carriage come from when cornering and why 250 km / h is nothing for BMW
Let's immediately define the terms: M2 Competition is the most emotional car of all M-models (which are released right now). You will say that in the BMW lineup there are much more powerful and fast cars, and you will be right, but none of them can argue with a small compartment on the level of involvement in the management process and the degree of driving pleasure. What is commonly called driving sensations?

The purpose of the M2 Competition is unmistakably guessed in its bold appearance. The sports coupe does not just openly declare its temperament, but literally shouts about it publicly: pumped-up, muscular wings, which barely fit 19-inch wide wheels, aggressive fangs of air intakes, barely covering radiators, and indecent silencer. It seems the time has come to forget about good manners because behind the wheel of an M2 Competition, you definitely won't need them. Of the distinctive features of the version - the original mirrors, the updated design of the front bumper and black lacquer on the nostrils of the grille.

A year ago, the M2 Competition appeared in the company's catalog not just as a more hardcore alternative to the usual M2, but as its full replacement. Delights around the predecessor were balanced by a fair amount of criticism, mainly to the power unit. Albeit a modified, but still, civilian engine N55 with a single turbocharger did not meet customer expectations. As a result, BMW decided to completely abandon the concept of a sports coupe for every day and made the car that the audience wanted so much: even more uncompromising.

The first thing I want to do, sitting behind the wheel of a coupe, is to lower the seat down - landing in the M2 is still unexpectedly high. Installing optional seats also will not save the situation. Of course, even in a racing helmet, a small margin above the head in the M2 Competition still remains, but a lower seat position would clearly be preferable for a car sharpened for driving on a track. Compensation for a non-ideal fit can be considered an updated tidy with virtual scales, programmable buttons M1 and M2 on the steering wheel and a proprietary M-tricolor on the seat belts.

Special effects appeared in the voice of “emka,” it became even more powerful and more energetic, and under the discharge of gas behind you such a rumble was heard that someone had dropped a dozen bolts in a tin bucket. At this very moment, a car with an instructor in front showed a left turn, which means it’s time to move from acoustic to riding exercises.

The first few laps in the shooting, to get acquainted with the track and determine the braking points, so the instructor keeps a moderate pace, and I have the opportunity to be distracted by tuning the car. Following the engine, I transfer the 7-step “robot” to the most extreme mode, and, on the contrary, I leave the steering most comfortably. In M-models, the steering wheel is traditionally overweight, and in Sport + mode, an artificial effort on the steering wheel personally begins to bother me.

Finally, the warm-up was over, and we went to full strength. From the first minutes, there comes a clear understanding that the S55 inline-six with twin turbocharging from the M3 / M4 models is precisely what the previous M2 lacked. Even though the Sochi Autodrom is an incredibly demanding motor track, I have not for a second thought about the lack of power. It is here just enough so that by the end of the central straight arrow of the speedometer came close to the limiter. Even after 200 km / h, the compact coupe continues to pick up speed with enthusiasm.

Together with the new engine, the M2 Competition also had a U-shaped carbon strut, too familiar from older M3 / M4 models. It increases the rigidity of the front end and, as a result, improves the accuracy of reactions to the steering. But this, of course, is not all that was done in the car to improve handling.

I did not accidentally mention the sport suspension mode when setting up the car during the warm-up session. Instead of the familiar mechatronic chassis adjustment button in another M2 cabin, the M2 Competition is equipped with a plug and conventional shock absorbers instead of adaptive ones in the suspension. But do not think that this is the youngest of the M-models loses the rest in turns. Both damping elements and springs at the M2 Competition are selected for the sole purpose of improving the lap time.

And this, damn it, is felt literally at every turn of the Sochi track! The compact coupe writes perfect trajectories, responds immediately to steering, and has an extremely neutral chassis balance. And how right are the regular Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires? Even in the most high-speed cornering of the track, the clutch stock allows driving indecently quickly. Although sometimes the stabilization system made the blinking pictogram on the dashboard feel, I feel free to write it off from overconfidence in handling the accelerator pedal.

Especially for those who, in addition to the engine on the previous M2, for some reason was also dissatisfied with the brakes, BMW M GmbH specialists have good news. From now on, an optional brake system with six-piston calipers and 400 mm discs in the front and 4-piston calipers and 380-mm discs at the rear is available for the compact coupe. Ceramics will not be offered to you even for an extra charge, but even without it, such a system effectively upsets a two-door from any speed.

M2 Competition left a pleasant aftertaste. I am sure that those who are dissatisfied with their predecessor will be pleasantly surprised by the work done and will try out a new product from Bavarians. Partly spur sales M2 Competition on the Russian market will help meager selection in the segment of compact sports cars. The closest and only competitor with a similar ratio of the driver’s experience for each ruble invested is the Porsche 718 Cayman GTS. Everything else is either much more expensive or entirely from another league.

Speed magic

3.3 seconds from 0 to 100 km / h - once such numbers of acceleration could boast single supercars. But who am I kidding? Even by today's standards, this is a crazy acceleration. About the BMW super-sedan, such dynamics became possible, firstly, due to all-wheel drive, which the Bavarians resisted for a long time due to ideological considerations. And secondly, due to the unique modifications for the Competition version.

It can be a long time to prove that the M5 feels very natural on the track. And in terms of technical equipment and endurance, this is true: the car can withstand in combat modes all day, just have time to fill up the fuel and change tires. But in real life, a BMW super-sedan looks on the racetrack as ridiculous as Messi in the form of “Real.”

This car - a real eater unlimited autobahns, and this is its special magic. Perhaps this is one of the most comfortable and controlled 250 km / h of maximum speed available in modern cars. And with the optional M Driver’s Package, this figure can be increased to 305 km / h.

By the way, about the packages. The appearance of the current version of the Competition is due to the M5 sedan, or rather the package of modifications developed for it, which first appeared on the F10 generation in 2013. The first cars with Competition Package had increased by 15 liters. With. Power, sports exhaust system, retuned suspension, original 20-inch wheels, and decorative elements. A year later, BMW released the limited edition M5 Competition Edition of 200 cars, and since 2016 the Competition Package option has become available for the M3 / M4. As a result, the package of improvements became so popular among customers that the Bavarians decided to make a separate version based on it, first for the M5, and then for other M-models.

Unlike the M2, the M5 in the Competition version is sold in parallel with the regular M5, but in Russia, the car is only available in the fastest version. As befits a real business class, the sedan does not scream about its character with an unimaginably bright appearance. First of all, the Competition version gives an abundance of elements painted in black lacquer on the body: grille, air ducts in the front fenders, side mirrors, door frames, a spoiler on the trunk lid and an apron of the rear bumper. The original 20-inch rims and again black painted exhaust pipes are also in place.

But much more exciting changes hidden from the eyes inside the car. Obviously, no one had the task to turn an already rigid super-sedan into an uncompromising track-tool. Consequently, it was necessary to take into account the fact that most of the time, the car will drive on public roads. But even despite this, the M5 Chassis has undergone significant refinement. The springs became 10% tougher, the clearance is 7 mm less, another software was developed for adaptive shock absorbers, other stabilizer mounts appeared in front, it was now utterly new behind it, and some suspension elements were transferred to spherical hinges. Even the engine mounts made twice as hard.

As a result, the M5 Competition rides along the track virtually to the rhythm of the compact coupe M2. Minimal rolls, incredibly accurate steering and crazy der Hak in long arcs do their job. And if a super-sedan loses some fractions of a second in turns, mainly due to the mass, then it smoothly plays it off during acceleration and deceleration. 625 l. With. power and powerful carbon ceramics do not leave any chances. However, the real rivals for the M5 Competition are to be found in the model range of other manufacturers of the big German troika. Only next time it is better to choose an unlimited autobahn.
